Wickford & Runwell Team Ministry: Recent grant awards

The Essex Echo have just covered the recent award of a grant from the UKSPF Feasibility Fund to our Parish for a feasibility study to explore the possibility of using St Andrew's Church as a cultural and heritage centre for Wickford, in addition to the services and other activities that currently happen there. See https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/24775666.wickford-church-hoping-transform-heritage-centre/.

As a Parish, we have also been successful in gaining grants for groundwork investigations at St Catherine’s Church (from Friends of Essex Churches, National Churches Trust, and Minor Repairs and Improvements Grants). Additionally, we have been awarded funds by the National Lottery Community Fund to begin work to create a Community Wellbeing Garden at St Andrew's. This work is primarily to make the garden area fully accessible.

In 2023, the Echo covered our fundraising campaign for work on St Catherine's Church due to subsidence (https://www.echo-news.co.uk/.../23223658.st-catherines.../). We completed Phase 1 of this project in 2023, having raised £20,000 (including grants from the Benefact Trust and The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme - see https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/24016113.government-grant-fund-repairs-south-essex-churches/). Since then we have been fundraising for Phase 2 of the project, which involves groundwork investigations that will enable a means of underpinning the church to be designed. Fundraising will then begin for Phase 3 of the project which will involve underpinning the church building.

We are very grateful for all funds raised including individual donations and monies raised through fundraising events, many of which have been supported by music groups and choirs.

The new Basildon Deanery website

The Basildon Deanery is a group of Church of England churches in the Basildon, Billericay and Wickford areas. Our 19 churches are grouped in 10 parishes and have great community activities, enjoyable cultural events and artefacts, beautiful environments, and fascinating heritage.

A new website for the Deanery flags up some of the most interesting aspects of our churches as well as other interesting places to visit in Basildon Borough. The Deanery website covers Community, Culture, Environment, Heritage, Contacts and News. Key features and initiatives in our churches are highlighted in relation to the four themes of Community, Culture, Environment, and Heritage. These four themes have been chosen as they are aspects of life, leisure and community which are of interest many people within the wider community whether they are people of faith or not. As such, they are potential points of contact with people who might not normally attend church.

On the site we explain why these four themes are of interest to churches:
  • Churches offer their local communities wellbeing opportunities at every stage and situation of life. The Community page lists some of the community initiatives provided by or supported by our churches.
  • The Arts are central to church life. Many of our activities take place within beautiful buildings which our services combine drama, literature, music, poetry and visuals. Our churches are also places to enjoy cultural programmes including concerts and exhibitions as well as being places to see art and architecture. Immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of Essex churches, where art, history, and architecture converge. Explore the rich tapestry of these sacred sites through the Culture page.
  • Churches are intended to be close to nature as the creation stories in the Bible tell us to tend the earth and care for it. The Environment page highlights some of the beautiful settings of our churches and initiatives to raise awareness of the climate emergency.
  • The Church of England’s church buildings form the nation’s largest “estate” of built heritage. A village, town or city's church is often its oldest building still in continual use, as well as its largest and most visited building. Churches are also often an area's most architecturally complex and archaeologically sensitive buildings. In all cases, they were constructed for the glory of God, for worship and mission, and stand as repositories of our shared history. Explore the rich heritage of Essex, where history, culture, and legacy intertwine. Discover historic sites, museums, and cultural landmarks that define the region.
Our overall aim is to create greater awareness of the churches in the Deanery, drive more traffic to parish websites, and encourage more people to visit our churches. Do let us know what you think of our new website.

Radion Project, Basildon

Radion is a collaborative project that explores Basildon’s past and present with a focus on nature and heritage within the borough. Basildon Borough History, Basildon Borough Heritage, its volunteers and local people have been suggesting pieces of built heritage to be celebrated and remembered within the Borough. These images have been used to create a panorama depicting an alternative skyline of Basildon from a chronological perspective.

This lenticular screen, which was launched today, allows two contrasting images to appear to change and move as you walk past the screen, creating an optical illusion. The lenticular screen is located at the back entrance of the cinema in Basildon, which acts as second entrance for visitors arriving by car or foot. This area is currently the car park off Great Oaks, near The Basildon Post Office Depot.

Students from ten local primary schools including Ryedene, Lee Chapel, Millhouse, Fairhouse, Pionner, Janet Duke, Noak Bridge, Great Berry, Northlands and Ghyllgrove School have all been exploring the importance of local nature through leaf rubbings and identification. The nature panorama depicts key green spaces around the borough with each leaf inserted (over 2,000) having been made by a different child.

Accompanying the lenticular screen is a series of QR codes which intend to animate the screen, from an audio history tour spoken by local people, a nature map showing where each schools leaves can be found and more.

Richard Feldwick, Churchwarden for St Catherine's Wickford, was interviewed for the project and St Catherine's features in the panorama.

Other recent projects with a heritage focus include The BasildON Creative People & Places programme which is built on multiple projects that aim to engage across all of our communities. These were inspired by a range of unique cultural activities that were developed and assessed before putting in the application for funding to Arts Council England. Alongside this, extensive community discussions were undertaken to ensure the activity is what local people want to see!

‘Young Pioneers’ is a series of youth-led creative activities, developed through our creative skills development programme for 16-25 year olds, funded and supported by ReGeneration:2013, a Creative Estuary project. Supported by industry experts, the young pioneers have developed their own project that uses creativity to drive change in their local areas. Halls Corner Film: Made in collaboration with local filmmaker Maz Murray, Halls Corner Film explores Wickford’s past and present through intergenerational storytelling between Young Pioneer Em and her family. Watch the film here!

Field Artists is a creative exploration project set in the Basildon Borough. Artists embed themselves within a community within 5 areas of the borough, and co-create work in response to the connection they create. The Field Artists residencies support artists investigating what is happening within 5 areas of Basildon Borough - Wickford, Laindon, Billericay, Pitsea and Vange, and Basildon itself. This artist led process will enable better understanding of communities and residents, and aims to produce a series of public art pieces across the Borough alongside a digitally held archive of the residencies.

Syd Moore is an acclaimed novelist and short-story writer whose work focusses on the historic witch hunts in Essex. Her first book, The Drowning Pool (HarperCollins, 2011) looked at the legend of Sarah Moore, a notorious sea witch, in Moore’s home town of Leigh-on-Sea. The bestselling Witch Hunt (HarperCollins, 2012) investigated the hysteria of 1645–47 inflamed by the notorious Witchfinder General. Moore continues to explore the witch hunts of Essex in her current series The Essex Witch Museum Mysteries (Strange Magic, Strange Sight, Strange Fascination, Strange Tombs) published by OneWorld. The Strange Days of Christmas (OneWorld, 2019) is her first short-story collection. Prior to writing, Moore was a lecturer, worked extensively in the publishing industry and presented Channel 4’s book programme, Pulp. She was the founding editor of Level 4, an arts and culture magazine, and co-creator of Superstrumps, the game that reclaims female stereotypes. Moore was also the Assistant Curator of ABBA: Super Troupers The Exhibition that launched at the O2 in December 2019 and co-curated This is What an Essex Girl Looks Like at the Beecroft Gallery, as part of her work with the Essex Girls Liberation Front. Having founded the ‘Front’ she spearheaded the campaign to have the definition of ‘Essex Girl’ removed from the Oxford Learners’ Dictionary. And was successful.

For the Field Artists project, she has contributed an essay about Wickford which includes mention of St Mary's Runwell and the Running Well. In the piece, she concludes: "Wickford has its issues and, like other places, could do with some investment in the community to become whole again. But its soul is expansive, unique, eclectic, ancient and generous too. And of course, a town’s soul is its people. Wickfordians should feel very proud." Also on the site is a short film capturing Madame Curiosité’s Pub Quiz Caper live at The Railway Club in Wickford, an interactive performance piece scripted and performed by Moore.

St Andrew's Wickford: New archive displays plus sculptures and paintings

See the changing face of Wickford Town Centre at St Andrew's Church with new displays of archive photos showing shops in the Town. Much thanks to Basildon Heritage for the displays. Visit St Andrew's to see these archive photographs plus sculptures by Nicola Ravenscroft and paintings by members of Runwell Art Club.

The Runwell Art Club exhibition features animals, children and nature, as a complement to Nicola Ravenscroft's mubcub sculptures. These sculptures are of children intimately connected to the earth – reminding us of our duty of care to life, to love, to planet Earth.

Last night, for this week's Unveiled event, Basildon Heritage's Ken Porter gave a fascinating and informative talk on famous people from the Wickford area.

mudcubs… touching earth, bringing peace
5 September – 31 December 2022
St Andrew’s Church, 11 London Road, Wickford, Essex SS12 0AN

St Andrew’s Church is usually open: Saturdays from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm; Sundays from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon; Mondays from 1.30 to 3.45 pm; Tuesdays from 1.00 to 4.30 pm; Wednesdays from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon; and Fridays from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm.

See http://wickfordandrunwellparish.org.uk/whats-on.html for fuller information.

Children pay attention to the world finding wonder in it. A child’s journey from the front of the house to the back will ‘be full of pauses, circling, touching and picking up in order to smell, shake, taste, rub, and scrape’, ‘every object along the path will be a new discovery’ because ‘the child treats the situation with the open curiosity and attention that it deserves’ (Sister Corita Kent). That is why the children are our future and can lead the way into a better future. This is also why Jesus said a child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

. . mudcubs . . are Earth’s messenger-angels: they silently call us to live in PEACE .. with nature and with each other.

Previously exhibited at St Martin-in-the-Fields, St John’s Cambridge, HSBC global headquarters Canary Wharf, Churchill College Cambridge, Cambridge University Faculty of Education and coming to us from the Talos Art Gallery’s ‘Natural Elements’ exhibition where they spent three months outdoors standing guard at the base of an old tree, these are sculptures to touch and feel and cherish. Nicola says: “Earth’s children are life’s heartbeat: they are her hope, her future ... they are breath of Earth herself. Creative, inquisitive and trusting, children are Earth’s possibility thinkers. They seek out, and flourish in fellowship, in ‘oneness’, and being naturally open-hearted, and wide-eyed hungry for mystery, delight and wonder, they embrace diversity with the dignity of difference.”

Nicola Ravenscroft is a British sculptor and songwriter whose sculpture has a lifegiving presence and a peaceful stillness. A graduate of Camberwell School of Art, London, UK she has owned and run a sculpture gallery and, as an art teacher, has nurtured many young people into celebrating their inherent creativity and thinking beyond the walls. Her sculpture installation With the Heart of a Child was part of a project exploring what the arts in transdisciplinary learning spaces can contribute to primary education. Nicola has been commissioned to create the Westminster National bronze memorial, honouring the sacrifice of NHS and careworkers on the covid front line.

Friday 11 November, 7.00 pm, St Andrew's. Jonathan Evens will give a presentation on 'Congruity and controversy: exploring issues for contemporary commissions.' Modern art commissions have led to debates about the Church working with artists that have significant mainstream reputations versus those without, and between secular artists and artists who are Christians. In his illustrated presentation Jonathan shows work made for churches by all these groups of artists and examines the resulting debates.

Friday 18 November, 7.00 pm, St Andrew's. Rev Simpkins & the Phantom Folk: Rev Simpkins’ music mixes the colourful folk tradition of Appalachians Mountains with the melodiousness and carefully-observed lyrics of the Kinks. Close harmonies intertwine with banjo, French horn, and bass. At this concert the band will perform the Rev’s acclaimed fourth album and book, 'Saltings' in its entirety.

Created with the Illustrator, Tom Knight, Saltings is a loving portrait of the mystery and beauty of Essex's salt marsh wilderness, and a meditation on the real human cost of the wilderness time of the pandemic.

Found within 50 miles of London, the saltings are one of England’s last natural wild spaces. Working as a parish priest a few miles away, Matt came to the saltings to retreat and compose these compelling and compassionate songs about his community’s real-life experiences during the pandemic. Saltings portrays hope found amid wilderness.

The Reverend Matt Simpkins is the fourth generation of his family to be ordained priest in the Church of England. Prior to ordination, Matt was a professional musician having been a choral scholar at Oxford University and a Lecturer in Music. He collaborated with Kenney Jones of the Small Faces to reconstruct the orchestral parts of their 1968 psychedelic masterpiece Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake. In 2019 a diagnosis of cancer and a period of illness brought an opportunity to make new music and the Rev released the hope-filled album Big Sea in 2020, which was selected as one of Louder than War’s albums of 2020.
