Artlyst: Modern Art Oxford Reopens After £2million Redesign

My latest exhibition review for Artlyst is on exhibitions at Modern Art Oxford as they reopen after a £2 million redesign:

'The main exhibition choice for the reopening of Modern Art Oxford is also the first institutional exhibition in the UK of work by Cuban artist Belkis Ayón (1967-1999). Ayón, whose work can also be seen at Tate Modern, was a Cuban artist and printmaker considered a pioneer in the printmaking world through her use of collography. By layering textured repurposed materials onto cardboard matrices, a form of collage, she was able to produce a vast range of tones, textures, and forms in large multi-panelled works. The exhibition includes film of Ayón using this process to create work, examples of which have now been seen at the Venice Biennale in 1993 and 2022, plus a retrospective at UCLA in 2016.

Her work is transgressive in that she reinterprets the traditions, rituals and beliefs of the Abakuá, a predominantly male Afro-Cuban religious group originating in the tribes and ritual traditions of West Africa, by focusing on the mythical female figure of Sikán.'

Artlyst - Michael Petry Discusses 'In League With Devils' with Revd Jonathan Evens

My latest interview for Artlyst is with Michael Petry regarding his upcoming exhibition 'In League with Devils':

'I’m interested in how belief systems interact with each other, and the secular world, because they’re very much at odds, particularly when parts of those beliefs call for actions that would be illegal or immoral or unethical. Those are the things I try to eke out in these projects.

I’m saying, how can we look at this without fighting, without violence, can we actually have a dialogue? That dialogue engages the secular world, because the basis is within the secular world. I think when you live in a world where religion is so contested, it is important that people have these dialogues.'

ArtWay meditation: NIcola Green

In my latest Visual Meditation for ArtWay I reflect on the faceless portraits of global religious leaders by Nicola Green which can currently be seen at St Martin-in-the-Fields:

'Green has noted that all the religious leaders she has met share the feeling that no one takes much notice of them. Maybe her faceless portraits reflect this sense that they are overlooked and ignored. Many religions, however, encourage adherents to nurture humility in response to the divine. C.S. Lewis wrote that the humble are not thinking about humility, rather they are not thinking about themselves at all. It could be that Green’s religious leaders exemplify this understanding and that her faceless depictions reflect this.'

My other ArtWay meditations include work by María Inés Aguirre, Giampaolo Babetto, Marian Bohusz-Szyszko, Alexander de CadenetChristopher Clack, Marlene Dumas, Terry Ffyffe, Antoni Gaudi, Maciej Hoffman, Giacomo Manzù, Michael Pendry, Maurice Novarina, Regan O'Callaghan, Ana Maria Pacheco, John Piper, Albert Servaes, Henry Shelton and Anna Sikorska.
