Interview Update

Art review: Eleven Twenty Three in St Bartholomew the Great

My latest review for Church Times is on Eleven Twenty Three at St Bartholomew the Great, West Smithfield:

'This exhibition demonstrates the value of welcoming and supporting artists within congregations. Artist and curator Elena Unger has been confirmed at St Bartholomew the Great, is a member of the PCC, and, when she requested permission to paint regularly within the building, was afforded that opportunity. As a result of that decision, she has become artist-in-residence and the curator of two exhibitions in the space, the current exhibition being in collaboration with fellow artist Heidi Pearce.

Unger’s deep knowledge and understanding of the building, and the ministry that is facilitated in and through it, is combined here with Pearce’s commitment to encounters with the uncanny as a positive experience within spaces and shows. The result is an exhibition that is perfectly attuned to the space - not simply in terms of its materiality but also its purpose - whether the works shown harmonise with the space or pose questions of it.'

Artlyst - Hidden Depths: The Woman in the Window – Dulwich Picture Gallery

My latest exhibition review for Artlyst is on 'Reframed: The Woman in the Window' at Dulwich Picture Gallery:

‘It’s such a simple motif – a woman at or by a window – yet, as curator Jennifer Sliwka ably demonstrates in this show, is one that contains hidden depths. This exhibition concisely and clearly maps out the history of this motif, shows us several specific foci of its use over the centuries, while also exploring the extent to which this has been a motif of male artists reflecting the male gaze, before then highlighting ways in which female artists have subverted, used and critiqued the motif.

It is a significant achievement on Sliwka’s part to navigate across so much contested ground with such care and consideration, while delivering an exhibition that never fails to engage visually as well as intellectually. Alongside her consideration of the ‘woman in the window’ motif are also reflections on the nature of windows; not simply openings in walls but, as Sliwka notes, charged thresholds, sites of observation or communication, and signifiers of wealth or spiritual meaning. The layers of meaning explored in this exhibition are, as a result, significant and deep.

The exhibition identifies the key geographic locations, cultures and time periods for which the motif had a particular meaning and what this reveals about issues of gender and visibility. As such, it is instructive to view the exhibition alongside Feminine power: the divine to the demonic at the British Museum, which explores the representation of feminine power or desire in material form. In both, no simple answers are proffered to the issues raised but there is a wealth of imagery and ideas shared with which to engage.'

Artlyst - Heavenly Visions: Churches As Spaces For Contemporary Art

My latest feature article for Artlyst explores interest among galleries and curators in showing contemporary art in churches:

‘From early on in their history, churches have regularly been spaces in which art was displayed and valued. That continued in the modern period, although the extent to which this so became somewhat obscured and the relationship between churches and artists became somewhat fractious. Nevertheless, there are many examples – from past and present – of churches showing contemporary art, whether as permanent commissions or in temporary exhibitions/installations.

Alongside, more recently, has also been an interest among galleries and curators in showing contemporary art in churches. Such site-specific exhibitions or installations evoke contemplative and meditative encounters with contemporary art seeming to offer audiences a secular experience of mindfulness and awe, and artists the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the unique architecture and atmosphere of the space in which they exhibit their work.' 

While many examples exist, in this article I consider four recent, current or forthcoming projects which illustrate a range of approaches: Jaume Plensa: In small places, close to home, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield; Dawn Ng: Into Air, St Cyprian’s Clarence Gate, London; Heidi Bucher: Metamorphoses II, Muzeum Susch, Susch, Switzerland; and Joana Vasconcelos: Tree of Life, Sainte-Chapelle De St. Vincennes, Paris.
