Start:Stop - Show us how to be the answer to our prayers.

Bible reading

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5. 16 – 23)

Meditation

Last week an Ordinand at Westcott House tweeted a photo of beds set out in St John’s Notting Hill for use by the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire. His tweet said: ‘When people say, in the aftermath of tragedy, prayers are useless, remind them they inspire acts like this. Those who pray are those helping practically as well - not mutually exclusive. St John's Notting Hill with St Clement's Church took a leading role in helping the misplaced and traumatised following the tragic fire.

This tweet is a reminder of the reasons why the Bible encourages us to pray without ceasing and to give thanks in all circumstances. Our prayers are not simply about God in action, they are also prompts for us to take action. Many of the prayers we pray can be answered quickly and with amazing results if we become better listeners to the voice of the Holy Spirit. If we can change our mindset as we pray, we can be used of God in mighty ways to be His agents of transformation.

Kim Butts is someone who has explained how this amazing reality became part of her prayer life. She was in a small group of women studying the Bible together and learning to pray. One young woman had three small boys and a husband who was working in another state to support them. He only made it home for a weekend every few months. There was very little money, but Bertie was always joyful. Her prayer one evening (they met in her home, as she couldn’t afford childcare) was for her husband to be able to come home for Christmas. The group prayed for the Lord’s provision and for this husband and father to be able to come home in time to celebrate with his family.

As they were praying Kim had an overwhelming sense that she was supposed to do something for this family. She shared her thoughts with another friend and they decided that between them they could help in the situation. First, they left Bertie, some money anonymously on the seat of her car. Bertie tearfully told our small group during their next meeting about how she had been worried about not having enough grocery money for the week. The envelope had contained the amount she needed.

Then when Bertie wanted to visit her husband for a weekend in case he was unable to come home over Christmas, they offered to take turns staying at her house to take care of the boys. While she was gone, they took the boys to get a Christmas tree. After it was set up, the five of them started making decorations for the tree and singing Christmas carols. The boys had a wonderful time and were so excited for their mother to come home. They all prayed for their father to be able to come home too. Imagine the surprised faces when both of their parents came through the door! The family had a wonderful reunion and a very special Christmas!

This is a very simple example, and it is easy to say, "We don’t need to pray before we help people." Very true, but we are often in a hurry and may miss opportunities as God puts them in our paths. Prayer helps us recognise those opportunities. Being the answer to the prayers of others is one way to be used by God. Being the answer to our own prayers is an astonishingly powerful privilege.

Prayers

Rescuing God, you left the safety and beauty of heaven to come and save us. You gave your very life to deliver us from death forever, and to bring us into fullness of life. We thank you for all who take risks and make sacrifices for others in their daily work, and especially for the men and women who work in our emergency services. Help us to honour and appreciate our police, fire-service and paramedics and to bless them through our interactions with them, our support of those known to us personally, and our prayers for them. We pray for all the residents of Grenfell Tower. We pray particularly for those who have suffered injury, those who have died, and all the residents who have are left without a home today, and the entire community that has been affected. Our prayers are with all who have been affected by this fire, especially the victims, their families and friends, and all who are still worried about their loved ones who are unaccounted for. As we pray, show us how to be the answer to our prayers.

God of truth and hope, in Christ you walk with your children through the valley of the shadow of death. Visit today all who know the panic and terror and trauma and grief of sudden, violent, ruthless attack, especially all who were victims of the attacks on Westminster Bridge, in Borough Market and at Finsbury Park Mosque. Bless those injured, bereaved, horrified, dismayed. Turn siege into renewal, fury into wisdom, doubt into gentleness and tension into trust, that as your people experience a Babel of tumult you may transform their chaos into a Pentecost of peace. As we pray, show us how to be the answer to our prayers.

God of mercy and judgement, in Christ you came among us as a vulnerable child and suffered a cruel and untimely death. In the face of terror you show us what we rightly love. Visit the people of Manchester today, in the midst of horror, and grief, and injury and dismay. Comfort the maimed and the bereaved. Strengthen the hands of those who bring healing, hope, and kindness in the face of agony and brutality. Teach each one of us to hold dear what can so suddenly be snatched away, to cherish what can so intimately be threatened, and to uphold what some are seeking to destroy. Make this time of terror and loss a moment of renewal in what we most deeply believe and most firmly maintain, that though we fear we may more truly love, and though we despair we may more profoundly know you, whose kingdom we seek, now and forever. As we pray, show us how to be the answer to our prayers.

Blessing

Praying without ceasing, giving thanks in all circumstances, being the answer to our own prayers. May all those blessings of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

@OurCofE

I have been asked to tweet for @OurCofE from Monday 19 - Sunday 25 December. @OurCofE is an opportunity to give people an idea of how vast, diverse and interesting the Church of England is.

It is an opportunity to reflect and expound on the best of parish and local life in the Church of England – the things that rarely get in the media. Follow my tweets @OurCofE from 10.00am on Monday 19 December and retweet to share the news of what is going on at St Martin-in-the-Field’s and at St Stephen Walbrook.

Advent & Carols at St Stephen Walbrook

To date this Advent at St Stephen Walbrook we have hosted: The Supreme Military Order of The Temple of Jerusalem, The Grand Priory of England; Fight for Sight; Michael Varah Memorial Fund; International Animal Rescue; Christ's Hospital Old Blues Association; City Livery Club; and The Worshipful Company of Gardeners. In addition to our regular services and recitals, we have also taken part in the Bank Churches Advent Carol Service, held our own Parish Carol Service, hosted a concert by the Hanover Choir, held a ceremony to invest the Lord Mayor as an Honorary Warden, taken a wedding and held a baptism.

Next week I will be tweeting @OurCofE throughout the week; a week that includes Start:Stop, Carols for a local company, a Walbrook Art Group lecture, our lunchtime Eucharist on a Thursday, and Midnight Mass. Then on Boxing Day (the Feast Day of St Stephen), Radio 4's Daily Service will be led by our curate Sally Muggeridge.

I will also tweet @OurCofE during the week about much that is happening at St Martin-in-the-Fields including: Community Carols, the Crib Service, Parish Carols and the Christmas Day Eucharist (at which I will be preaching).

#Joytotheworld

Today the Church of England launches its #JoyToTheWorld Christmas campaign with www.AChristmasNearYou.org and four special videos.

Over 27,000 services and events, ranging from the contemporary to traditional carols and nativity stories, have been added to a new website that enables the public to enter their postcode and find Christmas services and events happening near them.

Smartphone users will also be able to geo-locate the nearest services and add a reminder to their calendar. So far more than 2,300 congregations are providing mulled wine and 3,500 sharing mince pies after services.

In addition to the www.AChristmasNearYou.org website, there are four videos being released throughout December, each one sharing a moment of true Christmas joy. The short films star Gogglebox vicar Revd Kate Bottley, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Becoming Revered author Revd Matt Woodcock and comedian Paul Kerensa.

Underpinning the launch of the campaign will be a targeted nationwide social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter to encourage the public to share Christmas #JoyToTheWorld.

Speaking about her moment of Christmas joy from her former church in East London, Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin said:

"Mine has got to be at the very end of the Midnight Mass then we hear the words 'Yea, Lord we greet thee' - our first acknowledgment that Christmas has now arrived.

"Most Sundays people rush home to their rice and peas and dinner but we mingle, we stop and we greet each other and it's a wonderful moment. The Christmas Mass has got people attending who you wouldn't normally see and we get to pass on this Christmas joy."

Watch Rose's film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFjyw_njzvg

Commenting on the launch of the new website, Revd Arun Arora, Director of Communications at the Church of England, said:

"We think a perfect Christmas includes a Church Christmas. No matter how good the dinner or how expensive the present, a deeper joy is to be found in Church at Christmas.

"Whether it's midnight mass, a nativity play, a carol service of the joy of welcoming the Christ child on Christmas day, the best kind of Christmas involves a visit to Church."

Visit www.AChristmasNearYou.org to find out more.

Church of England parishes across the country can get still involved by uploading their services to www.AChristmasNearYou.org/upload and also by sharing their moments of joy on social media using the hashtag #JoyToTheWorld.

Today read Sam Wells's reflection - "We want to be where God is, and God's on the edge, so we want to be there too."

Twitter Trail: Stations of the Cross 2016

Picture

Stations of the Cross 2016 was inspired by the perilous flight of modern day refugees, which led the curators to examine which led the curators to examine Jesus' journey afresh.

The exhibition has been spread over 14 different venues, both religious and secular, and combines contemporary pieces with Old Master paintings and Renaissance treasures. In this way the exhibition invites visitors to take their own artistic pilgrimage across London.

On March 22, all 14 destinations in the exhibition joined together for a Twitter Trail, which took the visitors on a digital tour of the exhibition, which you can experience in its entirety by clicking here.

@OurCofeE

The Church of England in 140 Characters is an exciting year long project on Twitter to tell the story of the Church of England through the eyes of its people, providing a daily insight into modern faith in action.

Each week, followers of the account will be given an insight into all the work that goes on into the day to day running of a church community from schools to chaplaincies to cathedrals. Followers will be able to peek behind the curtain of church life and see behind the scenes as they get a feel for daily life in parishes. In addition to daily life there will be a glimpse of the inevitable unusual and unexpected events that come with being part of the Church of England. Through it all the account will seek to show through thousands of tweets how God is at work in His Church each day.

From 21-27 December Katherine Hedderly from St Martin-in-the-Fields will be the host for the Church of England’s Twitter project, that tells the story of the church through the eyes of its communities around the country. She will be tweeting about the St Martin’s community each day. Do follow @OurCofE and re-tweet to share the life of St Martin’s at Christmas far and wide.

St Martin's, Advent, ChurchLive, Twitter & periscope

St Martin-in-the-Fields will broadcast three events live via Periscope on Advent Sunday enabling us to share key moments in the life of our community with an audience around the world and also those who don't normally go to church.

These events are:
To keep up to date with timings of each broadcast, follow @ChurchLive and @smitf_london updates on Twitter.

The Church of England is partnering with Twitter UK to broadcast services across the world using mobile technology.

ChurchLive, was created in conjunction with Twitter UK as a way of showcasing a broad range of live church services to global audiences simply and accessibly through use of a smartphone. ChurchLive could be the first taste of Church for those unfamiliar with church services and an introduction to the best of worship, preaching and prayer. ChurchLive will also enable other people to rediscover church in a new way or for those in other countries to learn more about Church of England services.

Rev Arun Arora, Director of Communications for the Archbishops' Council said: "This is a project designed to bring Church of England services from Malton to Miami, Middlesbrough to Milan and Manchester to Mumbai. Those who may not make it to church on a Sunday for all sorts of reasons will have the opportunity to be part of a service. The ability to join in worship shouldn't be restricted to geographical constraint. We know that Periscope users are a global audience and we expect that there will be as many watching services broadcast via Periscope as are physically present at the services themselves."

Earlier this year parishioners at one village church, St Radegund's Church in Grayingham, in the Diocese of Lincoln, were joined by another 350 people around the world for their regular traditional Sunday service after becoming the first to experiment with Periscope.

Julia White from Twitter UK, said: "Periscope gives people and communities the opportunity to live broadcast everything from on-the-spot breaking news through to individual reflections. It's great to see the Church of England taking the best of what they have to offer and using Periscope to show it live across the world."

Tallie Proud, Digital Officer for The Archbishops' Council of the Church of England said: "It could be someone too ill to attend, a family who want to 'attend' even when on holiday or someone who just wants to know what the church is like before they make the sometimes scary step of walking into the building for the first time."

"@ChurchLive" will see a different church in the Church of England broadcast a live weekly service to global audiences via the Periscope app over the course of a year. The first service took place on Sunday 11th October and featured a service with Canon Andrew White, the "Vicar of Baghdad" who spoke at The Point, a Fresh Expressions church in West Sussex.

Blog Action Day: Inequality #BAD2014, #Inequality, #BlogAction

On the 16th October, people from around the world raised their voices through Blog Action Day to generate an unprecedented conversation on how we can address inequality. An audience of millions saw that message — which will continue to ripple forth for some time.

“Malala knew the power she had to speak up for herself, and those who couldn't, by sharing her story. Authentic voices are always the best way to convey struggles of inequality and tell stories of our shared humanity.” — Malala Fund post

“Extreme inequality should not be ignored—or worse, celebrated as a sign that we have a high-performing economy and healthy society.” — Bill Gates' post

“Being a female and from a country where gender discrimination continues to be an enormous problem, I didn’t have to think twice about the topic to write on. The fight starts off from my mother’s womb.” — Blogger Rekha Dhyani's post

These are just a few tastes of the conversation that started yesterday.

If you'd like to see some other highlights, the best place to do so is Orbit http://launch.orbit.do/. Orbit is Blog Action Day's sister platform, where you can feature your own blog's content as part of a conversation, like we saw around #inequality yesterday. You could also search for #BAD14, #BAD2014 and "Blog Action Day" on your social media networks or visit the participants list.

Sophia Hub update

This coming  Tuesday, 26th August, Bev Stratton will be our speaker at 7.00pm for the Sophia Hub's Enterprise Club. The evening enterprise club session will run from 7.00 - 9.00pm with plenty of opportunity for networking, informal mentoring and peer support.
The topic is customer service.  Bev is highly experienced in supporting businesses and has proposed this topic which is relevant to start-ups, however smallBev says: 'Many of us have been on the receiving end of bad customer service and in these difficult times customers are more ‘savvy’ than before and are looking for not only greater value for money, but a better quality service as well. What separates a successful business from the unsuccessful is a quality customer service model.'
Bev has worked for the Redbridge Council for 31 years and for 26 of those years has worked closely with business as a Business Development Officer, and for the past ten years as the borough’s Town Centres and BIDs Development Manager. She will provide a few tips on how to create a quality customer service model for your business.
We are also offering our 2nd training session run by a Timebank member. I will lead an hour on an introduction to Twitter - Thursday 28th August, 2pm – 3pm, at St John’s Church. Bring your laptop or tablet or smart phone if you have one (and if you know how it works) – we have wifi. Alternatively you can use/share one of our laptops or just listen in.
I am donating my time and so will earn our Timebank currency of 2 hours (1 for prep, 1 for the session).  Those that attend will donate their Timebank currency (1 hour each).  The ‘money’ we make will be used for things like ‘paying’ to the volunteers for their time in running the Timebank, ‘paying’ other venues to run future sessions, ‘paying’ a member to design a Timebank flyer etc.
Please note – all the transactions need to take place through the Timebank and you need to be a Timebank member.  It’s easy.  Click on the Timebank website on the blue square on the right.
If you are not a member we can help you join up beforehand or if you come at 1pm we can register you before the session – but please let us know you are coming  You will need an email account.  We can help you with this if you don’t have one.  Please contact us.
Timebank members – please click on the offer and send us an email to say you want to come. The offer has been posted on the website.
