Foyer display: Jonathan Kearney

‘The promise of the morning sky’ by Jonathan Kearney (PVA glue, acrylic, wood)

St Martin-in-the-Fields is home to several commissions and permanent installations by contemporary artists.

We also have an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions, as well as a group of artists and craftspeople from the St Martin’s community who show artwork and organise art projects on a temporary basis.

One of the initiatives from this group is a changing display of work by the group members. Each month a different member of the group will show an example of their work, so, if you are able, do return to see the changing display.

Jonathan Kearney is an artist and teacher. He runs the Fine Art Masters course at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London and is Postgraduate Programme Director. For many years he has used PVA glue and acrylic paint, exploring movement, patterns, trace and colour.

There are many times we fear that hope has gone missing, a just and loving reign is despairingly distant, the long promised Kingdom of God has never arrived. Yet every day the early morning light hints at the coming sun. Long before the sun is visible its light warms the darkness and bathes the mist into brightness. Our dreams are energised by the promise of the morning sky.

The power of creativity as a catalyst for change

My most recent piece for ArtWay is about the recent exhibition by graduates of Central Saint Martins at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

In the article I explore why Central Saint Martins, a world-famous arts and design college and part of University of the Arts London, would choose to show work by its graduates in a church. It’s a question with several different answers all of which coalesce around an exhibition entitled central saint martin in the fields held at St Martin-in-the-Fields in October 2017.

The exhibition draws on historical links between the two institutions. central saint martins in the fields demonstrates the common concerns between an internationally recognized centre for art and design education and research and a church that actively engages with contemporary art in its commissioning and mission.

An exhibition of work by recent art and design graduates from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London

St Martin’s School of Art was established in 1854 by St Martin-in-the-Fields. The Revd Henry Mackenzie and others were concerned that art and design training should be developed alongside the religious and general education already provided by Church schools, to ‘extend the influence of science and art upon productive industry’ following the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The art school soon became independent, and over a century later in 1986 merged with Central School of Art and Design to become Central Saint Martins. Today, the College is an internationally recognised centre for art and design education and research, based in King’s Cross.

For this exhibition Central Saint Martins returns to one of its roots, St Martin-in-the-Fields. Over 150 years later, our connection remains the belief in the power of creativity as a catalyst for change in both individuals and the wider community.
