Derek Hunt and The Prince’s Master Crafters: The Next Generation

Derek Hunt, who designed the West Window at St John's Seven Kings, is involved in the current Sky Arts series 'The Prince’s Master Crafters: The Next Generation.'

The series sees a selection of top amateur craftspeople take on a variety of crafting challenges to supercharge their skills before each of them creates a final showcase piece to present to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in person. Drawn from across the country, the six amateur craftspeople explore the history and importance of six key disciplines. They’re joined by some of the country’s leading experts who each week set them a new task within their crafts.

The challenges and experts are as follows:
  • Episode 1: Wood Carving – Sarah Goss asks the craftspeople to create a carving inspired by William Morris and the arts and crafts movement
  • Episode 2: Stained Glass – Derek Hunt challenges the craftspeople to create a stained-glass panel to include a symbol
  • Episode 3: Weaving - Rezia Wahid sets an intricate task asking the craftspeople to use different types of weaving in as they weave material of their choice
  • Episode 4: Blacksmithing – Phil Carter challenges the craftspeople to create a fire poker with a leaf detailing
  • Episode 5: Stone Carving – Zoe Wilson sets a task to create a stone carved leaf
  • Episode 6: Pargeting – Johanna Welsh’s task for the crafters is to create a pargeted panel of leaves and acorns
  • Episode 7: Grand Final
The West window at St John's Seven Kings was installed in 2005. The theme is “Light of the World” and its design brings together references from St John’s Gospel with elements particular to St John’s. Hunt’s commissioned designs can be found in churches, theatres, schools, public libraries, shopping centres and private buildings in Britain and abroad.

Cartoons 4 Trees

After taking a short course on comics with Sarah Lightman, artist Sam Cowan was hooked! As a keen environmentalist, she paired her love for doodling with her wish to do something constructive on the climate change/ food security front - tasks both done beautifully by trees - and Cartoons 4 Trees was born. One tree is planted in the world for every issue subscribed to.

Upcoming events

commission4mission will have a stall at the Winter Fayre in Seven Kings this Friday. Our stall will include books, cards, Christmas cards, jewellery, meditations, notebooks, prints and T-shirts. This is an opportunity to purchase our original Christmas cards.

The Seven Kings Business partnership has been working with Redbridge Council and other partners to create this second Winter Fayre in Seven Kings. The Fayre will be on Friday 21st November from 3.00pm – 7.00pm right by Seven Kings station – in the bay opposite The Joker pub.

This is an excellent initiative on behalf of businesses to use spaces on the high street for community events, to build up relationships with residents and to increase opportunities for trading. So far the programme includes live music and entertainment, face painting, stalls, food and Farnham Green School Choir. More is being planned!

I will be showing photographs from the East London Three Faiths Forum Tour of the Holy Land and sharing some reflections based on the tour in services at St John's Seven Kings on Sunday 30th November and 7th December (10.00am). The service on 30th November will be our Advent Reflections Service while that on 7th December will focus on our Christian Aid Partnership Project.

At 6.30pm on Sunday 7th December I will be sharing some reflections, meditations and photographs in the Listening to God session at St Laurence Barkingside. These will either be based on my sabbatical art pilgrimage or the East London Three Faiths Forum Tour of the Holy Land.

Bishop Stephen's 9th missionary journey

Bishop Stephen walked from Woolwich to Seven Kings via Stratford today for his ninth missionary journey within the Diocese of Chelmsford as part of the Diocese's Centenary Celebrations. Several members of St John's Seven Kings met +Stephen at the parish boundary and, as we walked with him to St John's, heard stories of his breakfast with the British Legion in Woolwich, the Greek Orthodox couple he met in Stratford who want to attend St Johns Stratford on Sunday, and the two schoolboys who asked about his crozier and ended up agreeing to pray for the Bishop as he promised to do for them.

At St John's we gathered in our community garden for a time of public prayer for the church and community. +Stephen outlined his vision for his missionary journeys as a means of making visible the work of the churches in the Diocese within their communities. +Stephen then joined our first Anniversary celebrations for the Sophia Hub which runs from the St John's Centre and which builds community by supporting social enterprises locally.

Bishop Stephen's ninth missionary journey

Bishop Stephen Cottrell has been undertaking 10 missionary journeys in the Diocese of Chelmsford during the Diocese's Centenary Year. His walk on Tuesday 30th September will be the penultimate journey and will take him from Woolwich to Seven Kings via Stratford. The idea is that people can come and join him for all or part of the walk each day, and at breakfast, lunch and in the evening there is an opportunity for the local church to use him in some sort of activity.

His route in Redbridge will take him from Ilford Station  to St John's Seven Kings via Thorold and Benton Roads. A group from the parish will meet him at the Ley Street/Benton Road parish boundary at about 16.20 and will walk with him to St John's. There will be public prayer in our community garden with the Bishop at about 17.15.

There are several ways in which you could be part of +Stephen's missionary journey. First, a group will leave St John's at 16.15 to meet +Stephen on the way and walk with him to St John's. Second, you could join us for public prayer in the community garden at St John's at 17.15. Third, you would be very welcome to come to the Sophia Hub Anniversary event in the evening.

The Seven Kings & Newbury Park Sophia Hub has been open for one year and is celebrating its first anniversary with a business networking event on Tuesday 30th September from 5.45pm at St John's Seven Kings (St Johns Road, Seven Kings, Ilford IG2 7BB). We would love you to be there celebrating this milestone with us and our special guest, The Rt. Revd. Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford.

The event will include: a Sophia Hub presentation; sharing your views on enterprise and community; meeting our start-ups; opportunities to network and join our timebank; buffet and refreshments. We have exciting achievements to share with you including the delivery of Sophia Courses, a weekly Enterprise Club and the setting up of a Timebank.

See our website - http://sophiahubs.com/seven-kings/ - and blog - http://sophiahubs7k.wordpress.com/.%C2%A0 for more details.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 30th September. Please RSVP to ros.southern@sophiahubs.com.

The Winners

Part 1 of our Mission Weekend at St John's Seven Kings was full of flair and creativity as we hosted Seven Kings Got Talent. With over 30 performers there was plenty of variety in what was a packed show. We enjoyed soloists, duos and groups performing songs, instrumentals (guitar, tin whistle and piano), magic and dance (tap and Indian). In between the competition sections, the United for Christ Band performed worship songs. Our judges - Keith, Irene and Dennis - had a difficult task which they performed with great aplomb. The evening was compered by Dr. Winston Solomon.

Tomorrow we look forward to Part 2 of our Mission Weekend with a Dougie Dug Dug Crazy Science Praise Party for all the family at 4.00pm.
