Poem about Runwell to be published in Amethyst Review

A new poem I have written which is inspired by St Mary's Runwell is to be published by Amethyst Review on 22 May 2023. The poem entitled 'Runwell' is among poems I will be reading as part of a joint poetry reading with Tim Harrold at St Catherine's Wickford on Saturday 20 May, beginning at 4.00 pm. The poem, which describes the church and its surroundings, also summarises its history, while taking the nearby Running Well (from which Runwell's name may derive) as its refrain.

Another poem that I will be including in the reading is a poem about Julian of Norwich, which is also published this month as part of an anthology of poems (All Shall Be Well) celebrating the 650th anniversary of Julian's shewings. This poem is based on a large painting 'The Revelations of Julian of Norwich' by Australian artist Alan Oldfield which is to be found at the Belsey Bridge Conference Centre in Ditchingham, Norfolk.

My poems and stories have been published by Amethyst Review, International Times and Stride Magazine. I will be reading with Tim Harrold, a poet who creates images of profound challenge and change, of pause and process, of chrysalis and catalyst. His most recent publication is ‘Verses versus Viruses’.

The poetry reading comes at the end of an Art Trail day in which art to be seen includes works by Val Anthony, William Butterfield, Enid Chadwick, Antony Corbin, Christine Daniels, David Folley, David Garrard and Julia Glover at St Andrew’s, St Catherine’s and St Mary’s churches, plus a photographic exhibition at the Salvation Army, Jackie Burns’ Space Art at St Andrew’s, Tim Harrold’s assemblages at St Catherine’s and paintings by Pam Jones at St Mary’s. All this is part of the One Beautiful World Arts Festival.

Tim Harrold's art exhibition 'The Art of the Diorama' will be able to be seen as part of the 'One Beautiful World' Arts Festival, Friday 12 – Friday 26 May, St Catherine’s Church, 120 Southend Road, Wickford SS11 8EB.

Tim will be exhibiting a selection of dioramas constructed over the past decade, some of which have never been seen publicly before, and some entirely new ones. He see these miniature ‘worlds in boxes’ as visual parables, lost objects with forgotten stories found and reimagined into new tales of meaning and significance.

Tim is an artist who works with bric à brac, flotsam and jetsam, the discarded or misplaced along the journey of life. He finds lost objects and gives them new meaning through his three-dimensional assemblage style which brings together found and sourced elements into visual parables.

Wembley Park Art Trail

Wembley Park's boulevards and areas are a vast free public gallery of art and culture. Enhancing the area’s global reputation for sport, music and live entertainment, their public art highlights Wembley Park as a diverse, distinctive and vibrant neighbourhood. Their free art trail consists of 14 pieces across a number of mediums, including paints, digital mixed media and upcycled materials.

I particularly wanted to see the installations by Micah Purnell:

Underpinned by a sense of togetherness, diversity and hope, Against the Odds and Power in Unity were inspired by people uniting in tougher times to stand together for the greater good. A theme Micah Purnell has been looking over through 2020 and 2021, he sought to bring a positive and memorable experience to Wembley Park, creating an 'Ahhh' moment through the powerful design.

I have worked with Micah on a number of occasions over the past two years. See these articles and workshops at:Look out for an interview with Micah in Church Times shortly.

Stories of Change: Hope, Faith and Love

The nationally-renowned Methodist Modern Art Collection of more than 50 works will go on show in churches across Coventry this autumn as an Art Trail, entitled Stories of Change: Hope, Faith and Love, as part of the city’s celebration as UK City of Culture. The art trail itself will display 34 works, 11 of which will be at Coventry Central Hall.

The Collection includes works by artists such as Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, Edward Burra, William Roberts, Patrick Heron, F N Souza and Jyoti Sahi.

The Art Trail marks the relaunch of the Collection after a two year conservation and re-framing project to preserve the works and ensure they will be able to be displayed for many years to come.

The Art Trail will start at Coventry Cathedral and Coventry Methodist Central Hall in the city centre. Then visitors will be encouraged to follow the trail beyond the city into churches in Earlsdon, Balsall Common and Fillongley, which are part of the Coventry and Nuneaton Methodist Circuit.

The Methodist Modern Art Collection Art Trail ‘Stories of Change: Hope, Faith and Love’ will be available to view on selected days from Saturday 4 September to Sunday 3 October 2021.

While the Church of England’s post-war response to church re-building and artistic commissioning is well known and epitomised by Coventry Cathedral, the Methodist Church’s engagement with developments in twentieth-century British religious art is less well known. The story of the Methodist Modern Art Collection will be celebrated appropriately in Coventry this autumn. And, it is hoped that the carefully selected works will provide a unique moment of healing and contemplation, speaking to people in differing ways, as the nation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

LAUNCH EVENT

Friday 3 September

Starting at Coventry Cathedral then moving to Coventry Central Hall

5.30pm Coventry Cathedral Evensong
6.30pm Coventry Central Hall

Both events are led by the President and Vice-President of the Methodist Conference, Revd Sonia Hicks and Mrs Barbara Easton.
