On Your Marks Holiday Club (2)

On Your Marks … Get … Set … Go! 50 children, aged 5 to 11, had the opportunity to hear from Olympic and Paralympic athletes (through DVD interviews) and take part in the 'Global Games' at the Holiday Club at St John's Seven Kings this week. As they did they also discovered what it was like for the disciples to follow Jesus and how they can be on his team today.
Based on Scripture Union’s On Your Marks holiday club material, the Holiday Club was full of creative teaching, games, craft, songs, prayers and Bible reading as the children learnt about God’s great plan for salvation. Children competed in basketball, long jump, skipping and quoits competitions and made medals, trophies and laurel wreaths, among many other craft activities. The holiday club ran from Tuesday 24th – Thursday 26th July. All those involved really enjoyed this year’s holiday club. It was great fun, we all learnt a lot and it was fantastic that lots of children come along.

On the final day an Olympic torch was brought along for the children to see and hold. The above photo shows the children with Holiday Club helper, Margaret Amann, holding the Olympic torch.

Local church-based Olympic-related events

‘GOD in the PARK’ is an exciting venture that is happening on Saturday 14th July 2012, from 11am - 6pm. It is a day, where Christians from all denominations will come together as Christ’s body to Goodmayes Park for a time of worship, fun and fellowship. GOD in the PARK presents a fantastic opportunity for Churches across the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering to come together, encourage one another and grow in friendship. The day is going to be filled with worship, lots of fun, (music, dance and street entertainment etc) bouncy castles, marquees serving tea/coffee plus cakes! All events that will be happening in the day will be free, but families and various groups coming on the day are encouraged to bring their own picnics.

Speakers include Jeff Lucas and Jonathan Oloyede. Performers include Dave Bilborough and Helen Yousaf. 'GOD in the PARK' is also the latest Olympic-themed event at which the Run with the Fire digital exhibition will be shown. Run with the Fire will run on their big screen at different points during the day. Keep up-to-date with news of 'GOD in the Park' at their facebook page by clicking here.

On Your Marks … Get … Set … Go! Children, aged 5 to 11, have the opportunity to join up with other athletes and take part in the 'Global Games' at the Holiday Club at St John's Seven Kings this year. As they do they can discover what it was like for the disciples to follow Jesus and how they can be on his team today.

Based on Scripture Union’s On Your Marks holiday club material, the Holiday Club will be full of creative teaching, games, craft, songs, prayers and Bible reading as children learn about God’s great plan for salvation. The holiday club runs from 10.00am – 12.30pm from Tuesday 24th – Thursday 26th July and is open to all people aged 5 to 11. As usual all those involved are really looking forward to this year’s holiday club. It will be great fun, we’ll learn a lot and it would be fantastic if lots of children come along.

The setting for On Your Marks is the Global Games, a fictitious international sporting tournament which takes place in Galilee in the first century AD. Each day a different sporting event from the Global Games Pentathlon is explored that links in with the Bible passage.
Many sporting events are not about individuals playing against each other but about teams working together, often with someone taking the lead to inspire, encourage and support. Children love supporting teams, being part of a team and having that sense of belonging even if they are not particularly into sport. This is especially true if the team leader is one who inspires them. It is this idea of being a member of Jesus’ team that is at the heart of On Your Marks.
On Your Marks is based around stories about Jesus from Mark’s Gospel. Each day the children will meet Jesus as he calls his disciples (picks his team), demonstrates his healing power, challenges them to keep stepping out in faith, shows his authority, reveals himself as the Son of God (their team leader) and teaches them to keep following him as their team leader. Children will discover and begin to experience what it is like to be a member of the team that has Jesus as the leader.
Each day at On Your Marks the children can join real-life sports men and women on location as they share their sporting experiences, their role as team players and how Jesus makes a difference in their lives. They can also be transported to sports matches and events with the storyteller as he brings stories of Jesus alive.

Fairtrade & Harvest @ St Johns

The FAIRTRADE Mark is a registered certification label for products sourced from producers in developing countries. For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards which are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International(FLO). These standards are agreed through a process of research and consultation with key participants in the Fairtrade scheme, including producers themselves, traders, NGOs, academic institutions and labelling organisations such as the Fairtrade Foundation.

“Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.”

Fairtrade is a tool for development that ensures disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries get a better deal through the use of the international FAIRTRADE Mark.

Leviticus 19. 1-10 shows us that God cares about our relationships; with our parents, with our holy God, and with the poor. This whole chapter from the book of Leviticus is concerned with the social responsibilities of God’s people, with verses 9 and 10 dealing with the relationship between he abundance of the harvest and the needs of the poor. In celebrating the harvest God’s people should never forget those who are unable to celebrate.

In our time, this includes not forgetting those people who produce and harvest food for us but who may be badly treated or exploited in the process. The Fairtrade initiative attempts to bring us back into a relationship with the producers of our food, like that we would have had in the past when we grew our own food for ourselves, or knew personally those who grew our food.

Fairtrade gives us the ability to be able to shop for the things we like from around the world, knowing that those who produce those things have been treated fairly. As a result, we could say that Fairtrade shopping is holy shopping!

We have a tendency to think of holiness and being holy as somehow being different from everyday life. These verses in Leviticus remind us that that isn’t so. God’s people back then could show holiness by thinking of others when they collected the harvest. We can show holiness by thinking of those who produce our food when we go shopping for it; by buying Fairtrade. We can show holiness by remembering those who are homeless as we bring our Harvest produce to give to the Redbridge Night Shelter. We can show holiness by growing our own food and sharing any we don’t need with others as a transition initiative which is a response to the challenge of peak oil. We can show holiness by taking environmentally friendly actions in order to care better for God’s creation.

We have the privilege of an abundant food supply – fruit and vegetables in and out of season. Our harvest is abundant therefore we have a responsibility to those food producers around the world and to the environment, both of which make that privilege possible. Buying Fairtrade produce is just one way in which we can show that we take this responsibility seriously and one way in which we can be holy when we shop.

Because we haven’t always done that and because there is a tension between celebrating the abundance of God’s provision and remembering those in need, we now have a time of saying sorry to God for the ways in which we and our society have failed those in need and exploited our environment. So let us pray the following prayer of confession:

Heavenly Father, Lord of the harvest, we confess that we do not always know or even care where our food comes from. We confess that we do not always care for our neighbours or the planet as you taught us to. We confess that we do not always care for the welfare of those who produce our food as we ought to. Help us to take small steps in changing how we shop for our food. Help us to see that how we shop is still part of our worship of you. Help us to worship you with our life choices. Amen.

Local children had a week of fun and games with the Showstoppers! holiday club at St Johns Seven Kings. Based on Scripture Union’s Showstoppers! holiday club material the week was full of games, crafts, drama, music, dvd presentations and Bible stories as more than 50 children explored the stories of creation, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lion's den, Jesus' birth, and his crucifixion and resurrection.

We had a great time at this year's holiday club. Showstoppers! provided opportunities for children to be creative together - each day featured arts workshops (including dance, magic, music and photography) with those taking part performing at the end of the session.

We believe that God’s image in us means that all people are creative in some way. A creator God has created creative people! Through the creativity shown in this year's Holiday Club we hope we have also lifted the curtain on the greatest show on earth – God’s great plan for salvation!
