I AM triptych

I'm taking several works on paper to Harlow for the next commission4mission exhibition including the I AM triptych above. This finds its original inspiration in Colin McCahon's Victory over death 2 and is painted on used sheets of flipchart paper allows the original text to permeate the over painting plus collaging of I AM meditations by Alan Stewart and myself.

Click here for more about this exhibition and the Arts Festival of which it is part.

Community Information Event

The Community Information Event at St John's Seven Kings on Saturday 18th May from 11.00am - 1.00pm provides an opportunity for community groups and those organisations providing services in the local community to promote their organisation and meet local people. The event has been organised by the Seven Kings & Newbury Park Resident's Association (SKNPRA).

The event is being supported by: ASNET, Brownies, Downshall Pre-School Playgroup, local churches, Goodmayes Quranic Study group, Kumon, National Blood Service, Newbury Park & Seven Kings Ward Councillors, Redbridge Swimmers Association, Redbridge Voluntary Care, Scouts & Rangers, Seven Kings Park User's Group, Seven Kings Safer Neighbourhood Team, Shine Dance Class, SKNPRA, Sophia Hubs and St Johns Road Neighbourhood Watch.

If the weather allows the event will be in the community garden but, if we have inclement weather, we will be in the worship area at St John's. There will also be a Plant & Table-top sale (including refreshments) in the St John's Centre.

The hosting of this event and the input of local churches is a Biggest Birthday Party Ever event, part of the Pentecost Festival.

ArtWay, Bohusz-Szyszko and sabbatical

Following on from my article in the Church Times about the work of Marian Bohusz-Szyszko I have also had an article published on the ArtWay website describing my visit to St Christopher's Hospice to see Bohusz's work there.

This piece is one of a series that I will be writing following visits to sites which are of interest in exploring the relationship between modern/contemporary art and faith. This series began with a report of visits to sites in the South of France and will continue next year as the focus of the sabbatical I will take then.

Quiet Day: Abbotswick House of Prayer

Today we have had an excellent Cluster Quiet Day organised by our curate at St John's Seven Kings, Santou Beurklian-Carter, and led by George Kovoor, Principal of Trinity College Bristol, at Abbotswick House of Prayer.

George spoke with animation, humour and simplicity about the nature of Church and the ministry of encouragement (citing the example of Barnabas). His primary illustration was that of a stamp on a letter. The stamp is an identifier and representative of a country. It has stickability and bears a message bigger than itself. Finally, the price of the stamp has been paid. Similarly, we are to be identified as Christians and representatives of Jesus. We need perseverance and steadfastness in our ministry as we too share a message bigger than ourselves; that the price has been paid and God's love is freely available to all.

Heart 4 Harlow Festival 2013: Celebrating Life

Heart 4 Harlow Festival 2013 is Celebrating Life

The festival will be launched by the Chair of Council, Maggie Hulcoop, who inspired the event, at 6.00 pm Thursday 23rd, at the stage in the Water Gardens.

Every afternoon from 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm there will be live music and dance acts on the Performance Stage in the Water Gardens (see charts below).

The art of our youth will be on display all weekend in the entrance of  the Civic Centre, and in the Gibberd Gallery on Thursday and Friday.

Korban, a Passion Play, is premiered in the Play House on Friday night and Saturday night.  With music specially composed for the occasion, this is a ‘must see’ event.  Get your tickets early from the Play House Box Office to avoid disappointment.

On Saturday morning in St Paul’s Church there will be two lectures about artists: Stanley Spencer and John Piper.

On Saturday, a showcase of the enormous artistic talent that we have in Harlow will be on display between the Library and the Water Gardens.

The Harlow Big Lunch will be on Sunday 26 May 2013 from 12.30. People will be eating in the Water Gardens restaurants, and picnicking in the Water Gardens and at St.Paul’s..

Throughout the weekend there will be charity stalls to inform you about what is happening in our community, what help you can find and how you can support others.

Of course we have not forgotten the youngest members of the community: all weekend there will be fun fair rides in the Market Square and a Bouncy Castle in the Water Gardens.

Heart 4 Harlow, Church and Communities working together, is led by the Town Chaplain, Robert Findlay.

The first week of the month long Harlow Visual Arts Fair is being run in conjunction with the Heart 4 Harlow Festival
