Artlyst: August 2026 Art Diary

My August 2026 Art Diary for Artlyst focuses on retrospectives for a range of artists whose work engaged with aspects of spirituality, including Mark Rothko, Paul Thek, Peter S. Smith, John Piper, and John Constable. Group shows at the National Gallery of Ireland, Interchurch Center in New York, and Benjamin Rhodes Arts explore aspects of the environment and of art itself. Finally, there is news of and information about the Faith Art Prize.

Artlyst: The Art Diary July 2026

My July 2026 Art Diary for Artlyst begins with group exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth Menorca and GRIMM exploring disorientation and complexity as zeitgeist themes emerging from contemporary culture. Exhibitions at The Whitworth, V&A, Cento, Gazelli Art House, and Hauser & Wirth Somerset engage with aspects of contemporary culture in different ways, using dialogical and relational approaches that connect with either the past or the environment. Exhibitions at Fitzrovia Chapel engage with aspects of that space’s history while exhibitions at Charleston and Waddington Custot explore artists and movements from the early years of Modernism. Finally, exhibitions at St Oswald’s Ashbourne and the American Visionary Art Museum focus on current expressions of Christian spirituality.'

Artlyst: The Art Diary June 2026

My June 2026 Art Diary for Artlyst begins with solo exhibitions or installations by the likes of Sanya Kantarovsky, James Turrell, Lakwena Maciver, and Renaud Muraire, among others, that tap aspects of spirituality. Exhibitions engaging with churches come next, including Manifesta 16 Ruhr. Then I highlight exhibitions by female artists that explore aspects of mysticism, often in the context of particular environments. ‘British Landscapes: A Sense of Place’ at Pallant House explores similar themes in a British context. A series of group shows explores art created within regions that addresses elements of re-visioning history, enduring knowledge and evolving faith. I end with two interesting exhibitions in my local area: Focal Point Gallery and Beecroft Gallery in Southend-on-Sea.
