St John's Seven Kings features twice in the latest edition of 'The Month', the newspaper for the Diocese of Chelmsford. There is coverage of the Bronze Green Business Redbridge award we have gained, as well as of the community opera workshop and performance of 'Pirates of Penzance' which we hosted over the summer:

favourite The Pirates of Penzance.

 

Kathryn said: “We were delighted to bring the community opera workshop to a new venue and to a new community this year, St John's Seven Kings. The opera workshop was a really wonderful occasion.

“Thirty people attended the workshop and had a great afternoon learning the chorus parts of the opera.

“In the evening, together with soloists from Meridian, they performed to a capacity audience a highly successful reduced version

of The Pirates of Penzance, one of Gilbert and

Sullivan's best-loved comic operas.

“Community opera workshops seem to bring such joy to so many people and seem to give

an opportunity for people of all abilities to work together to create something really special.

“For many people this is their first experience of opera and for some their first experience of singing in public.”

Today Meridian Opera brought its unique style of community opera workshop to a new venue; St John’s Seven Kings. 28 people joined them to learn the chorus parts and then perform a reduced version of one of Gilbert & Sullivan's best-loved comic operas - The Pirates of Penzance - to an audience of 80.

Meridian Opera specialises in bringing short, staged scenes of popular and light opera to its audiences, with a particular interest in making opera more accessible in the community.

The production was directed by Kathryn and Paul Robinson with Katherine Fellowes as Musical Director and Producer and was the third collaboration between Meridian Opera and the Performing Arts Adviser for the Barking Episcopal Area (Rev. Kathryn Robinson).

The Pirates of Penzance and you!

Meridian Opera is bringing its unique style of community opera workshop to St John's Seven Kings. Come and join them to learn the chorus parts and perform a reduced version of one of Gilbert & Sullivan's best-loved comic operas.

On the rocky shores of Penzance, Frederic celebrates his twenty-first birthday and is released from his apprenticeship to a band of Pirates. He at once falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of a much respected Major-General. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and this is no exception! Members of Meridian Opera will sing the principal roles, but the workshop session will coach you to perform many of the chorus items. There will even be opportunities to be on the stage itself.

Music and words supplied. Refreshments provided. No experience needed, just bring your voice and come and join in the fun! Booty for the best dressed pirates!

Saturday 17th August 2013 - The event includes a full afternoon singing & performance workshop to prepare you for a show for the public:

1.00 pm – Singing & performance workshop

7:00 pm (doors 6:45 pm) – Performance (lasts 1 hour)

Come for the whole event, or just to watch the performance at 7:00 pm.

Workshop – £10 (£8 concession) if booked and paid for up to and including 13th August or £15 after 13th August and on the door.

Audience at 7:00 pm – Free, with retiring collection
