Artlyst: The Art Diary May 2026

My May Art Diary for Artlyst begins by highlighting two of the Pavilions at the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. These look to the past for contemporary inspiration, combined with reflection on contemporary issues. The latest exhibition by Richard Kenton Webb at Benjamin Rhodes Arts has a similar inspiration. Exhibitions of work by Hilma af Klint and Helaine Blumenfeld highlight the spirituality of abstract art. Contemporary issues are further explored through exhibitions by Barnaby Barford, Michael Petry, Michael Armitage, and Godfried Donkor, while exhibitions by Paula Rego and Olivia Plender examine the experiences of women. Finally, an exhibition and book explore responses to AIDS/HIV. Finally, ‘Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism’ at the Towner Eastbourne focuses on the Artists International Alliance.

Artlyst: The Art Diary December 2024

My December Art Diary for Artlyst takes us to Washington DC, New York, London and Bangkok:

'An exhibition of prints by Bruce Onobrakpeya also spotlights Nigerian artists exploring faith and spirituality through the lens of African heritage and mythology. A rare opportunity to see Romare Bearden’s ‘Paris Blues/Jazz’ series of collages also takes us to Paris, New Orleans, and Harlem. ‘Es Devlin – Face to Face: 50 Encounters with Strangers’ creates awareness of the conflicts from which refugees seek sanctuary, while the fourth Bangkok Art Biennale draws inspiration from Mother Earth as a nurturer and giver of life across cultures. Finally, Alexander De Cadenet’s ‘World Domination Burgers’ satirises the excesses of conspicuous consumption while ‘Carved & Cast’ presents a compelling survey of sculpture through the ages.'

Artlyst - Marvellous Icons

My latest article for Artlyst is a diary piece which begins with Irina Bradley's 'Metamorphosis' exhibition at the London Jesuit Centre and takes in secular icons, author's icons, After Icon, and celebrities as icons:

'Last year saw a First Biennale of Christ-centred Art held in Moscow with the blessing of His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Volokolamsk. The Biennale exhibited 150 works by 67 artists that created a dialogue between works of church art and contemporary artworks from a wide range of artists. One strand of the Biennale focused on ‘author’s icons,’ a term first proposed by the Russian art critic Irina Yazykova in 2015. Viktor Barashkov has explained that this term ‘points to the difference between the rendition of an icon by one master and another, which means that the icon can be made in a personal manner, a unique artistic style and can be based on the author’s own interpretation of the image.’

Among those exhibiting was Alexandr Tsypkov, who has recently been interviewed by Christian Century. Tsypkov is part of a group of artists called After Icon who, as Jason Byassee writes, beautify ‘abandoned buildings in Russia with ancient Christian images.’ The innovation of Tsypkov’s work, and that of his fellow artists in the After Icon project, is to create icons in ‘”secular” spaces—on rubble, trees, street corners, and the like, alongside fellow graffiti artists.’’
